Since 1998 Austin has purchased 20,000 acres of land to preserve it as open space and protect the area aquifers. Now they want to purchase another 2,000 acres for more preservation in Hays County with voter approved bonds. Click on the link below to see a map of the detailed area.

Almost 500 acres of ranchland straddling Onion Creek could soon be protected from development if a $4 million deal involving the City of Austin, the federal government and other local players wins final approval.
The Austin City Council on Thursday contributed $562,500 toward purchasing some of the development rights of the Hays County land, which lies within the Barton Springs watershed. The land is the site of the Gibson family homestead, which was settled in the 1800s. |
